Cinnamon Life stands today as the most ambitious integrated development ever undertaken in Sri Lanka. A landmark that has redefined Colombo’s skyline and reshaped the country’s global identity. Conceived as part of City of Dreams Sri Lanka, the project represents a defining chapter in the evolution of John Keells Properties and its long-term commitment to shaping the future of urban living.
The origins of Cinnamon Life trace back to a strategic vision formed more than a decade ago. Located on one of the most prominent and historically significant sites in Colombo, the land had long been recognized for its transformative potential. Planning began in 2012, followed by groundbreaking in 2014, marking the beginning of a development unlike anything previously attempted in the country.
From the outset, the ambition was clear. This would not simply be another residential development, but a city-making initiative, a fully integrated urban destination that brought together residences, hospitality, retail, entertainment, and commercial spaces into a single, interconnected ecosystem.
Reflecting on this intent, Inoke Perera, Sector Head of John Keells Properties, emphasized that Cinnamon Life was envisioned as a long-term investment in Colombo itself. Rather than responding to immediate market demand, the project was designed to anticipate how the city would evolve over decades, positioning Colombo as a globally competitive destination while creating enduring value for Sri Lanka.
“It was about thinking far beyond individual buildings,” Inoke noted. “This was a commitment to shaping the city’s future, creating something that Colombo could be proud of on a global stage.”
For the sales and marketing team, Cinnamon Life demanded a fundamental shift in how real estate was presented to the market. According to Nadeem Shums, Head of Sales and Marketing at John Keells Properties, this was not a product that could be explained through conventional real estate narratives.
“This was never about building apartments alone,” Nadeem reflected. “It was about creating a destination. Something that would transform Colombo, elevate Sri Lanka’s global presence, and redefine what urban living could be.”
Delivering this vision required an unprecedented level of coordination, expertise, and discipline. Spanning over 4.5 million square feet, Cinnamon Life involved the simultaneous construction of multiple large-scale structures, making it one of the most complex private-sector developments ever undertaken in South Asia.

“It was not an easy task,” recalled Ravi Wijewantha, Chief Financial Officer of John Keells Properties. “We were managing multiple buildings at once, coordinating international and local teams, importing specialized materials, and navigating complex regulatory processes. Strong financial discipline, governance, and long-term planning were essential to delivering a project of this scale.”
That discipline became a defining pillar of Cinnamon Life’s execution. From financial governance and procurement to engineering and construction management, every aspect of the project was guided by rigorous controls to ensure transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
“Our responsibility extended beyond construction,” Ravi explained. “We were managing the trust and investment of our customers and stakeholders. Maintaining that trust required careful stewardship at every stage.”
The development journey unfolded against the backdrop of some of the most challenging periods in Sri Lanka’s recent history, from the Easter attacks to the global pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis. Each disruption brought new uncertainties, impacting supply chains, labour availability, and timelines.
“There were moments when the obstacles felt overwhelming,” reflected Nayana Mawilmada, President of John Keells Properties. “The supply chain was global, the teams were international, and the building itself was highly complex. But we remained committed to delivering the project as envisioned, without compromising its integrity.”
Architecturally, Cinnamon Life presented challenges rarely seen in conventional developments. Every element of the structure was bespoke, with complex geometries and design features that demanded precision and persistence.
“This was not a repetitive structure,” Nayana explained. “Every component was carefully engineered. Staying true to the original architectural vision required determination, collaboration, and a deep belief in what we were creating.”
Behind the physical form of Cinnamon Life was an extraordinary collective effort. Thousands of individuals; engineers, architects, consultants, contractors, and specialists contributed to bringing the development to life. Many were young professionals entrusted with delivering one of the most complex projects ever attempted in Sri Lanka.
“There was a shared understanding that we were not simply building another development,” Nayana reflected. “We were creating something that would stand for generations.”
The defining strength of Cinnamon Life lies in its integration. Residents are seamlessly connected to world-class hospitality, retail, office spaces, and entertainment within a single environment, creating a lifestyle ecosystem previously unseen in the country.
“This level of integration is rare,” noted Nadeem. “You have residences, hotels, retail, entertainment, and commercial spaces all working together. It creates a complete urban experience that cannot easily be replicated.”
For those involved in its creation, seeing Cinnamon Life reach completion was deeply emotional.
“There was immense pride,” Nadeem reflected. “After everything the country and the team had endured, witnessing Cinnamon Life come together was a powerful moment. It showed what’s possible when vision, resilience, and commitment align.”
Beyond its architectural and commercial significance, Cinnamon Life represents something greater, a symbol of confidence in Colombo’s future, in Sri Lanka’s potential, and in the ability of local expertise to deliver developments of global significance.
“It was never just about constructing buildings,” Nayana reflected. “It was about creating something meaningful, something that would shape the future of the city.”
Today, Cinnamon Life Colombo stands not only as a residential destination, but as a defining landmark in Sri Lanka’s urban evolution. It reflects the enduring vision, discipline, and ambition of John Keells Properties, and its role in shaping Colombo into a truly global city.
